Giants beat writer disputes Seahawks GM's comments about Drew Lock

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported Friday morning that the Giants didn't convince quarterback Drew Lock to join the team by telling him he'd have a chance to win the starting job over Daniel Jones.

Schwartz called it a "heckuva story," one that came after Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said Thursday that he wanted to re-sign Lock before eventually trading with the Washington Commanders for Sam Howell.

Schneider told "The Wyman and Bob Show" that New York "basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter."

"No, the Giants did not — repeat, did not — entice Drew Lock to sign with them by telling him he would come in and compete with Daniel Jones for the starting quarterback job," Schwartz wrote.

Lock and the Giants agreed to a one-year, $5M deal on Tuesday, with the assumption that the 27-year-old would be serving as the backup to Jones.

Danny Dimes is entering the second year of a five-year, $160M contract extension that he signed last March. Jones' first season under the big new deal was disastrous.

The 2019 first-round pick missed Weeks 6, 7 and 8 due to a neck injury and then suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his return to action in Week 9. Jones finished his fifth season with a career-high 67.5 completion percentage but just 909 passing yards, two touchdowns, six interceptions and a career-worst 70.5 passer rating.
New York is expecting the Duke product to be fully ready for training camp.

"Sure, Lock could get plenty of action with the first-team offense in the spring and summer, as Jones continues his recovery," Schwartz wrote. "There is certainly a possibility the Giants take a quarterback high in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Even if that happens, Jones, if healthy, is expected to be the opening day starter."

The Giants hold the No. 6 pick in next month's draft as well as two picks in the second round at 39th and 47th overall. "
